Marine technology specialists Wartsila has signed an agreement with international shipping company Hagland Shipping AS to deliver the world’s first hybrid retrofit installation for a short-sea shipping vessel.
According to a statement, the deal was signed in December 2018 and will see a battery hybrid propulsion solution installed on the ‘Hagland Captain’, a general cargo ship owned by Hagland Shipping.
Wartsila has said the solution will significantly enhance the ship’s environmental performance by cutting emissions, fuel consumption and noise.

Included in the solution are a shore power connection to provide power for /unloading operations, a new reduction gear with power take-off (PTO) and power take-in (PTI) technology, as well as NOx Reducer (NOR).
Consequently, the nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions could be reduced by as much as 90%, and the vessel will be able to sail in and out of harbour on electric power for approximately 30 minutes, while overall fuel savings could reach 10%.
