With control of 34.5% of global capacity, European shipping continues to be one of the foremost geostrategic pillars of the Old Continent.
According to the new study by European Shipowners, this magnitude carries historical weight, given that the EU’s GDP is limited to 15% globally.
Dominance is identified in strategic market segments, with European shipping managing 45% of containerships, 34% of tankers, 32% of LNG carriers, and 28% of bulk carriers. These data make the sector a guarantor of the supply chain, serving by sea 76% of the EU’s external trade.
Finally, it is worth noting that European shipowners hold 44% of the global orderbook for alternative fuel vessels, with 54% of European orders concerning “green” technologies.
