X-Press Feeders and Evergreen form partnership with methanol vessels

SINGAPORE

Evergreen Marine and X-Press Feeders have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) implying that the Taipei-based ocean carrier will use X-Press Feeders’ methanol-powered vessels for transportation of containers in Europe.

X-Press Feeders is planning to run a series of vessels on green methanol and operate them within Europe. The Singapore-headquartered company, the world’s largest independent common carrier, recently presented its first dual-fuel powered vessel able to sail on methanol.

To begin with, the ships will be centered at the Port of Rotterdam and cover ports in the Baltic Sea and Scandinavia.

All in all, X-Press Feeders has 14 dual-fuel ships on order which will be delivered from Q2 2024 through mid-2026 to operate within Europe and the Mediterranean.

The carrier signed a contract with Dutch fuel supplier OCI Global in 2023 for the supply of green methanol known as bio-methanol.

According to a press release, the two companies will also work together to ”launch a feeder network, which will be the first in Europe to be powered by green methanol.”

X-Press Feeders aims to reduce is greenhouse gas emissions by 20% in 2030, 50% in 2040 and to reach net zero in 2050.

“We are pioneering the use of dual-fuel vessels and we decided to take delivery of our vessels sooner, rather than later, because we know we need to take significant steps today to meet the targets for reductions in GHG emissions,” says Francis Goh, X-Press Feeders’ COO.
