Recently, the first ship in the series of twelve 14,000 TEU methanol dual-fuel container ships built by Yangzhou COSCO Shipping Heavy Industry for COSCO Shipping Lines, N1299, held its steel-cutting ceremony. This marks the entry of this series of new fuel vessels into the substantive construction phase and signifies a key step for the enterprise in the layout of a new generation of green ship types.

The N1299 ship has an overall length of 335.9 meters, a molded breadth of 51 meters, and a molded depth of 29.9 meters, capable of carrying approximately 13,700 standard containers. The ship adopts a methanol dual-fuel power system, equipped with WinGD methanol dual-fuel main engines and generators. When using green methanol fuel, it can significantly reduce carbon emissions and meet the strict environmental requirements of the International Maritime Organization (IMO).

This ship type integrates multiple cutting-edge technologies and is configured with advanced intelligent ship systems, the world’s largest capacity class of permanent magnet shaft generators, a concealed bulbous bow, high-efficiency propellers, energy-saving ducts, and other equipment. It possesses the four major advantages of “safety, greenness, energy efficiency, and intelligence,” capable of meeting the EEDI Phase III energy efficiency indicators, representing the advanced level of current container ship technology.

The commencement of N1299 marks an important transformation of 14,000 TEU container ships from traditional fuel to new methanol fuel. This shift not only responds to the global shipping industry’s emission reduction trends but also provides crucial equipment support for the COSCO Shipping Group’s layout of green shipping routes. After being put into operation, this ship will primarily serve the Far East to America route, further enhancing the green quotient of this route.

As an important implementation unit of the COSCO Shipping Group’s “Green, Low-Carbon, Intelligent Shipbuilding” strategy, Yangzhou COSCO Shipping Heavy Industry has continuously exerted efforts in the field of green ships in recent years. From the successful delivery of the 16,000 TEU methanol dual-fuel container ship, to the commencement of the first ship in the current 14,000 TEU series, and further to the construction progress of the 114,000 dwt methanol dual-fuel oil tanker and the 325,000 dwt methanol dual-fuel ore carrier, the enterprise has formed a methanol-powered ship product system covering the full range of “container, tanker, bulk carrier” ship types.

As more green ships are successively built and delivered, Yangzhou COSCO Shipping Heavy Industry is contributing Chinese wisdom and Chinese solutions to the low-carbon development of the global shipping industry with practical actions.
