On July 18, the CX5008 “CAPE BILBAO,” the sixth 50,000-ton MR-type oil/chemical tanker built by CSSC Chengxi Shipyard Co., Ltd. for SCHOELLER, was delivered 105 days ahead of the contractual deadline. This marks the successful completion of the first vessel in the independently developed “Hongyun” series of 50,000-ton oil/chemical tankers by the company’s shipbuilding division.
The sixth 50,000-ton MR-type oil/chemical tanker is one of the main ship types independently developed by CSSC Chengxi. It boasts outstanding performance, superior cargo adaptability, and flexibility, with a liquid cargo tank capacity of 53,500 cubic meters. The vessel has an overall length of 182.70 meters, a beam of 32.20 meters, a depth of 19.10 meters, a design draft of 11.00 meters, and a service speed of 14.5 knots. It is classified by ABS.
During the construction process, CSSC Chengxi’s shipbuilding division faced a peak production period with dual-line operations, with as many as eight vessels simultaneously in the erection and mooring stages. This posed unprecedented challenges in resource allocation and workforce coordination. The project team adhered to the principle of “plan-driven production and lean-driven management,” ensuring that the schedule served as a clear roadmap for progress. The liquid cargo tank work was a key focus during the mooring phase. To meet the owner’s high standards for compartment tightness, the team efficiently and effectively completed tightness tests for all 14 liquid cargo tanks within a week. They also swiftly carried out specialized coating, installation, and commissioning of tank accessories and equipment. The vessel proceeded to sea trials with a high level of completeness, and the construction quality earned high praise from the owner, who sent a letter of appreciation to the company.
Amid the company’s fervent efforts to study and implement the mid-year meeting’s directives, the successful delivery of the sixth 50,000-ton MR oil/chemical tanker heralds a strong push for the second half of the year. CSSC Chengxi will uphold the principles of lean management, continuously improve, and strive to create star products, further enhancing the Chengxi shipbuilding brand.
