123Carbon, an independent platform for carbon insetting, and ZERO44, a software startup specializing in CO₂ management for merchant ships, have announced a strategic partnership aimed at connecting voluntary and mandatory carbon markets.

The collaboration will enable shipowners, operators, and charterers to manage their carbon strategies under both regulatory frameworks and voluntary initiatives.

Operators using low-carbon fuels can choose to retire, bank, or pool their emissions under the FuelEU Maritime regulation, or allocate them within carbon insetting programs to customers seeking to offset their scope 3 emissions.

The integration of the two companies’ platforms will allow users to consolidate carbon accounting, monitor vessel compliance in real time, and prevent double-counting by assigning specific fuel volumes for either compliance or voluntary purposes.

ZERO44’s software allows shipping companies to forecast emissions and assess regulatory exposure, while 123Carbon’s registry platform manages the issuance and allocation of Environmental Attribute Certificates across multiple transport modes, using Book and Claim methodologies.

Together, the systems aim to provide transparency and data-based decision-making in carbon management.

The partnership will be implemented globally, targeting various stakeholders across the shipping value chain, including ESG managers, finance teams, chartering departments, and fuel procurement units. The companies state that as global and regional climate regulations evolve, they will continue to develop solutions supporting compliance and decarbonisation goals.

123Carbon is a privately held company based in the Netherlands that operates a digital platform for carbon insetting in the transport sector. It provides systems to verify, issue, and allocate Environmental Attribute Certificates within supply chains, enabling organizations to account for carbon reductions generated through low-emission transport projects.

ZERO44 is a Berlin-based software-as-a-service company founded in 2022. It develops digital tools for shipowners, managers, and charterers to monitor and plan CO₂ emissions. Its platform integrates the management of the Carbon Intensity Indicator (CII), EU Emissions Trading System (EU ETS), and FuelEU Maritime requirements to support compliance and operational efficiency.
