More than 200 K Line employees, including 17 senior executives, gathered for an internal digital transformation forum that put data platforms, AI and safer vessel operations at the centre of discussion. The event shows that digital transformation is now as much about organisational culture and leadership as it is about deploying new technology.

Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha (K Line) has brought more than 200 employees together for an internal digital transformation (DX) technology presentation as the Japanese shipowner steps up efforts to embed digitalisation across its business.

The event was attended by 17 members of senior management, including Yukikazu Myochin, Chairperson of the Board, and Takenori Igarashi, President & CEO. According to K Line, the objective was to improve understanding of its digital transformation programme and encourage wider engagement across the organisation.

The first part of the session focused on the company’s own initiatives. K Line outlined work to build a data platform that supports cross-organisational use of information, alongside digital technologies designed to improve workplace efficiency and support safer vessel operations.

The second half featured Hiroshi Nakatani, Representative Director, Executive Vice President of Kawasaki Heavy Industries, Ltd., who discussed organisational transformation and digitalisation. He presented examples of reviewing organisational roles and functions, strengthening collaboration between departments and creating new businesses through digital initiatives. He also stressed the need for “promoting flexible DX tailored to on-site realities.”

That message is relevant for shipowners where many digital programmes stall after technology is deployed. Data platforms and AI require common processes, cooperation between shore departments and confidence from operational teams before measurable business benefits can be realised.

K Line has already been broadening its digital programme beyond traditional IT projects. The company said it has been advancing company-wide data utilisation while expanding the use of generative AI across the business. Internal forums such as this are intended to ensure those initiatives are understood beyond specialist technology teams and become part of everyday operations.

By bringing senior leadership, operational staff and technology teams into the same discussion, K Line is treating digital transformation as a company-wide management programme rather than a standalone technology project. That approach could prove just as important as the digital tools themselves as shipowners seek to modernise fleet operations and business processes.
