Klaipėda LNG terminal in Lithuania is set to become one of the first facilities in Europe to introduce a virtual biomethane liquefaction service

Terminal operator KN Energies disclosed that the new service will enable biomethane producers and suppliers to efficiently connect their operations to the LNG logistics system. It will also help monetise biomethane produced in Lithuania and other parts of Europe by facilitating its injection into the shared European gas grid.

With this initiative, Klaipėda LNG will be among the first terminals in Europe – and the first in the region – to offer such a service. Currently, only a few of the 28 operational LNG terminals across Europe provide either biomethane liquefaction or virtual liquefaction services.

The service is expected to go live later this quarter, pending the completion of certification and other preparatory steps. A key milestone was reached on 8 July, when the National Energy Regulatory Council approved amendments to the LNG Terminal Regulations, enabling the launch of the new service.

“This development will significantly enhance the competitiveness of the Klaipėda LNG terminal and further diversify the use of LNG infrastructure – without affecting its core function of regasification,” said KN Energies.

The operator said the new service will support the decarbonisation of maritime transport, particularly in light of tighter renewable fuel requirements set to take effect in 2025 under EU Regulation /1805.

Commissioned in 2014, the Klaipėda LNG terminal consists of a floating storage and regasification unit named Independence, a jetty, a connecting gas pipeline, and a gas metering station. FSRU Independence, built by Hyundai Heavy Industries in South Korea, has been owned by KN Energies since December 2024.
