Rigs, Masts and Sails: What surveyors need to know

A group of 20 marine surveyors gathered at the Seldén Mast Gosport facility in late June on one of the hottest days in the UK. Their mission? To learn about the work and manufacturing process that Seldén Mast conducts from their facility. Under the expert guidance of Richard Thoroughgood, supported by Technical Director Andy, and their colleague Zoe, the group were treated to an in-depth tour of the works. A number of masts were available for inspection and those who attended voted the morning session a great success. IIMS would like to put on record their thanks to Richard and his colleagues at Seldén Mast for accommodating and hosting us.

The group moved on to nearby Cams Hall Golf Club and after a buffet lunch, they were joined online by a further 20 plus delegates. The airconditioned meeting room was especially welcome! The afternoon session was led by IIMS member Kim Skov-Nielsen, an expert in the area of rings, masts and sails, who is based in Spain. Using a series of graphic photographs which identified faults and flaws, some obvious, some far less so, that could potentially lead to catastrophic failures, he delivered a masterclass.

About Seldén Mast

Seldén Mast in Gosport is the UK manufacturing and sales hub for the global Seldén Mast AB group.

The facility is a massive part of the Solent’s marine industry, specialising in carbon composite spars and all of the company’s dinghy masts.

Carbon Composite Production: The Gosport plant is the global centre of excellence for Seldén’s carbon fibre mast manufacturing. Carbon spars provide significant weight reduction while increasing stiffness, which increases upwind performance for race boats.

Dinghy Masts & Spars: The site produces all of the company’s dinghy masts, supporting everything from Olympic-winning boats to local weekend racers.

Premium Yacht Support: Gosport works closely with Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs), supplying spars and rigging for luxury and premium yacht brands like Swan and Oyster Yachts.
