Collision Involving CMA CGM Mermaid at Port of Muuga
According to reports, the CMA CGM Mermaid, a newly commissioned container ship, collided with a quay and another vessel at Estonia’s Port of Muuga on September 8. Fortunately, there were no injuries reported.

The incident took place around 11:50 UTC as the ship was arriving from Kotka. Images captured by local media reveal that the vessel’s plumb bow penetrated several meters into the quay, resulting in significant damage to the wharf.

The bulker involved in the accident, named Belasitza, also sustained damage to its bow. Details regarding any harm to the CMA CGM Mermaid have yet to be disclosed.

Data from MarineTraffic indicates that by 15:00 UTC, the navigational status of CMA CGM Mermaid changed to “aground.” Notably, its Automatic Identification System (AIS) was inactive for nearly three hours post-collision and resumed only shortly before sunset.

Port authorities have initiated an investigation and are in contact with the crew of CMA CGM Mermaid to ascertain what led to this incident.

CMA CGM Mermaid Overview
The CMA CGM Mermaid is part of a new fleet launched by Marseille-based shipping giant CMA CGM in 2024. This modern container feeder is one among ten sister ships designed with enhanced energy efficiency features. Constructed at Hyundai Mipo Dockyard in South Korea, it measures 205 meters long and boasts a gross tonnage of 32,245 tons with a capacity for 2,000 TEU containers.

This LNG-powered vessel aims for up to a 20 percent reduction in CO2 emissions—a commitment made official when orders were placed for this series back in February 2024. Its innovative design includes a sharp plumb bow intended not only for improved fuel efficiency but also poses potential risks if docking maneuvers are not executed accurately; experts note that such designs can lead to increased structural stress on port facilities during berthing operations.

Status Update
As of September 11 morning reports indicate that CMA CGM Mermaid remains docked alongside the damaged quay while investigations continue. The port authority is collaborating closely with crew members as they seek clarity on how this collision occurred.
