Goltens Dubai has marked a major achievement with the launch of Captain Arctic, a near-zero-emission exploration vessel built to navigate some of the world’s most fragile environments. The project showcases the power of engineering collaboration in driving maritime decarbonisation.
Goltens Dubai has announced the launch of the Captain Arctic, a 69-metre exploration vessel designed for near-zero-emission operations and sustainable cruising in polar and remote regions. The launch follows the successful completion of hull fabrication, marking a key step toward the vessel’s entry into service.
Built for the French owner SELAR in partnership with Chantier Naval de l’Océan Indien (CNOI) in Port Louis, Mauritius, the project unites advanced shipbuilding technology with a shared commitment to environmental responsibility. The Captain Arctic is designed to operate primarily on renewable energy, combining rigid sails with integrated solar panels to harness both wind and sunlight. This innovative hybrid system is expected to reduce carbon emissions by up to 90% compared to traditional vessels.

Goltens Dubai’s role included complete hull fabrication, production of the king post, and installation of essential components such as watertight doors. With fabrication complete, the vessel now moves into outfitting, systems integration, and commissioning, the final steps before its maiden voyage through Arctic waters.
Once operational, the Captain Arctic will serve as both a research and luxury exploration vessel, demonstrating how renewable energy systems can power maritime adventure without compromising comfort or safety. Its design reflects a growing shift in shipbuilding towards environmentally responsible tourism and vessel operations.
