EST-Floattech will supply its Octopus Lite battery systems for six new general cargo vessels built by Ferus Smit for Arklow Shipping. The collaboration marks another step towards cleaner, more efficient operations in short-sea shipping.

EST-Floattech has been selected to deliver its Octopus Lite battery system for a new series of six general cargo vessels to be built by Ferus Smit in the Netherlands for Irish operator Arklow Shipping. The project, which also involves Eekels Technology as the electrical systems provider, highlights the growing adoption of hybrid technologies in the cargo segment.

Working closely with Ferus Smit and Eekels Technology, EST-Floattech designed a battery configuration tailored to the vessels’ operational profile. The system will support grid stabilisation during sailing and power several onboard systems, including loading and unloading operations where an electric excavator is used. It will also supply power to the bow thruster and enable zero-emission port stays, reducing emissions across the vessels’ entire operating cycle.

The new 11,000 DWT ships continue the long-standing partnership between Arklow Shipping and Ferus Smit, who have collaborated on multiple vessel series over the years. The first vessel in the new series is due for delivery in 2026, with the final ship expected to be completed in 2029.

Patrick Kuiper, Mechanical Designer at Ferus Smit Shipyard, said, “We selected EST-Floattech as our partner, because of their proven battery performance and excellent service on previous vessel series. Their modular battery system design allows for capacity upgrades over the vessel’s lifetime, providing the shipowner with added flexibility and ensuring the vessels remain future-proof.”

The Octopus Lite system is part of EST-Floattech’s range of modular battery energy storage systems designed for maritime applications. The technology supports hybrid and fully electric operations, helping shipowners meet tightening environmental standards while improving operational efficiency.

Walter van der Pennen, Chief Commercial Officer at EST-Floattech, commented, “We are grateful for the trust that Ferus Smit, Eekels and Arklow Shipping have put in us. In general, we see a strong interest among cargo vessel owners to operate more efficiently, and with lower emissions. With tightening regulations our battery systems, in combination with modern electric propulsion solutions, help owners reduce fuel consumption and emissions today, while preparing them for the cleaner, more sustainable shipping of tomorrow.”

The project reflects a wider industry trend as shipowners seek practical solutions to cut emissions and comply with evolving sustainability goals, using battery technology to bridge the path toward greener maritime operations.
