A Spanish shipbuilder with construction facilities in the UK has secured class approval for its digital twin technology ready to use in condition monitoring and future naval projects

Spanish shipbuilder Navantia has been granted class approval from Lloyd’s Register (LR) for its digital twin technology that incorporates artificial intelligence (AI) for modelling naval ships.

LR issued an approval in principle (AiP) to the Grupo SEPI subsidiary’s AI-enabled digital systems after completing technical assessment of Navantia’s development, governance and validation processes for digital twins.

Navantia’s digital-twin framework can support condition monitoring and health-management systems for naval ships and facilitate enhancements in engineering and construction.

In particular, LR approved Navantia’s air-cooling system digital twin, developed for naval ships, that combines data-driven algorithms and machine learning models to analyse sensor data.

This monitors system behaviour and identifies early signs of abnormal performance, supporting maintenance and operational decisions on air-cooling equipment supplied by Frizonia.
