Austal and BMT signed a strategic agreement to provide scalable naval design and engineering capabilities, supporting the execution of shipbuilding programs. The agreement also creates a solid platform for collaboration in the commercial vessel markets, where both companies can combine their proven expertise in naval design with first-class shipbuilding capability to deliver competitive solutions to customers in Australia and internationally.

The agreement establishes an enterprise-level framework that allows Austal to access specialized resources as project demands fluctuate and creates a specific platform for closer collaboration on commercial vessel projects, a shared strategic priority area for both organizations.

Under the agreement, which comes into effect this month, BMT will provide naval architecture and engineering services to support the execution of vessel design and technical integration activities.

This scalable model allows Austal to respond efficiently to peak project needs, reducing the risk of delays while maintaining focus on core shipbuilding operations.

This collaboration also opens a structured avenue for the joint pursuit of commercial vessel projects, bringing together independent naval design expertise, including a broad portfolio of specialized designs, and proven shipbuilding capability to support faster and more competitive delivery for customers.

Both organizations aim to leverage this agreement to jointly pursue new market opportunities, reinforcing a long-standing working relationship between Australia’s strategic shipyard and its largest independent naval design capability, while focusing on the commercial and export shipbuilding sectors and supporting sustainable project pipeline growth for both companies.

Graeme Nayler, Managing Director of BMT, stated that “this agreement means a lot to us and reflects the great mutual value we see in collaborating with Austal. BMT has built its reputation over decades supporting prime contractors and shipyards in developing complex maritime capabilities through strong, trusted relationships across the shipbuilding sector, and Austal represents precisely the kind of forward-thinking partner we want to grow with.”

“Together, we bring highly complementary strengths: Austal’s position as Australia’s strategic shipbuilder and BMT’s position as Australia’s largest independent maritime design, engineering, and assurance capability. I am proud that this agreement reflects the maturity of that relationship and I am extremely excited about what we can achieve together, especially in the commercial sector, where there is great momentum and many opportunities ahead,” added Nayler.

Oliver Morton, Executive Vice President of Sales and Strategy at Austal Limited, expressed that “at Austal we are pleased to formalize this strategic agreement with BMT, building on a long-standing relationship founded on complementary capabilities and shared ambitions. As our shipbuilding programs continue to grow, access to specialized and scalable design and engineering support will help us respond with agility, while maintaining focus on delivering safe, efficient, and high-quality vessels.”

This agreement reflects the natural evolution of a relationship that has progressively deepened based on shared ambitions and complementary capabilities.
