The Port of Huelva completed the expansion works of the railway terminal at Muelle Sur, after carrying out the construction of a third track in order to implement the Rail Motorways service. This action involved an investment of more than USD 7.2 million, which was supported by European funds from the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan (Recovery and Resilience Mechanism, MRR), NextGeneration EU.
The president of the Port of Huelva, Alberto Santana, expressed his satisfaction with the development of this project, since it will make it possible to launch rail motorways from the Port of Huelva to northern Spain and Europe, “which will make it possible for semi-trailers and freight trailers unloaded at the Port of Huelva from the Canary Islands and other origins to be loaded onto the train and reach any market, thus promoting intermodality in connections.”
This action consisted of the creation of a new track (V3) of 1,211 meters in length, the expansion of the existing terminal by extending its platform toward the southwest, adding 15,112 additional square meters to the current facility, which already had 33,750 paved square meters. The project was completed with the updating and renewal of the terminal’s safety, signaling, drainage, and lighting systems. The works were carried out by the company Asch Infraestructuras y Servicios S.A.
The railway facility is adapted for 750-meter-long trains and features a double-track design on slab, connected to the track of the railway facilities of the Port Authority of Huelva and the main roadways located next to the current Border Control Post (PCF).
The current rail connections of the Port of Huelva from this Muelle Sur railway terminal include two weekly trains to Abroñigal (Madrid) and two weekly convoys to Fuenlabrada (Madrid), as well as four weekly formations to Majarabique (Seville), all for the transport of general containerized freight.
