Axpo carried out its first bio-LNG supply to a vessel in the Port of Barcelona. The refuelling operation was for a Ro-Ro unit of Mitsui OSK Lines (MOL), being the first ship-to-ship liquefied biomethane supply operation carried out in the port of Barcelona.
The MOL vessel Lapis Ace received bio-LNG from Axpo’s supply vessel Green Pearl, marking a new milestone in the development of alternative marine fuel infrastructure and services in Spain.
Axpo’s Head of Small-Scale LNG, Daniele Corti, stated that “the refuelling operation with MOL in Barcelona represents another key moment for the implementation of LNG in Spain. We are not only developing infrastructure, we are demonstrating that alternative marine fuels can be operationally reliable and cost-effective. As demand for LNG and bio-LNG continues to increase, Axpo’s recent operations in Algeciras, Málaga and now Barcelona demonstrate that this is no longer a niche market. It is a fundamental step in the maritime industry’s transition towards a lower-carbon future”.
Axpo was selected as the supplier for the supply of bio-LNG to MOL throughout the Mediterranean, providing bunkering services in the Spanish ports of Málaga, Algeciras and Barcelona. This agreement expands Axpo’s growing role in low-emission maritime transport and reinforces the existing supply agreement in Western Europe with MOL, which began in March 2025.
Axpo’s presence in Spanish ports has grown considerably over the last year. In April 2025, the company completed its first LNG delivery in Málaga, followed by further operations in Algeciras and Sines (Portugal). These milestones were made possible by Axpo’s 7,500 cubic metre LNG vessel Green Pearl, which improved the speed, flexibility and efficiency of this type of bunkering operations throughout the Mediterranean. Axpo currently also holds a licence to operate in the Port of Valencia.
In Italy, Axpo carried out the country’s first ship-to-ship bio-LNG refuelling in December 2025. Shortly after, in March 2026, Axpo chartered the next-generation fuel transport vessel Alisios LNG, in the Port of Huelva.
