BNSF Railway announced that the Barstow City Council approved the Barstow International Gateway (BIG) project, an integrated rail complex of 1,821 hectares planned for construction in west Barstow, California.
The initiative includes a terminal, an intermodal facility, and transshipment warehouses designed to transfer goods from international to domestic containers more efficiently and sustainably.
Containers arriving at the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach will be moved directly from ships to trains via the Alameda Corridor and subsequently to the BNSF main line to Barstow.
At BIG, containerized goods will be processed with zero-emission cargo handling equipment, prepared, and loaded onto convoys heading east using the BNSF national network. Westbound shipments will also be consolidated at this facility, improving the efficiency of trains returning to port facilities and other terminals in California.

La compañía también firmó un Memorando de Entendimiento (MOU) con el Distrito de Gestión de la Calidad del Aire del Desierto de Mojave para demostrar tecnologías de cero emisiones, incluidas locomotoras de maniobras eléctricas a batería, y un MOU con la Junta de Recursos del Aire de California para explorar tecnologías adicionales de reducción de emisiones y buscar oportunidades de subvención.
Además, BNSF se ha comprometido voluntariamente a reemplazar las unidades de maniobras existentes por máquinas de maniobras Tier 4 más limpias disponibles en sus instalaciones de Barstow.
La compañía también proyecta que BIG genere beneficios económicos a nivel local, regional y estatal, incluyendo aproximadamente 62.000 empleos relacionados con la construcción y 15.000 puestos operativos a largo plazo.
