Portos RS reported the start of the dredging of the Port of Rio Grande, which will be carried out by the vessel Utrecht, and which will cover the outer channel, inner channel and the berths, at a cost of US$ 83 million.

The project scope also includes environmental monitoring during the process. The contract, signed with Van Oord, has an estimated duration of 15 months.

“The dredging guarantees the necessary depth for the berthing of large vessels and strengthens the role of the Rio Grande port complex as a central asset for the production flow of Rio Grande do Sul,” stated the governor of that Brazilian state, Eduardo Leite.

Leite visited the Rio Grande Shipyard and the Multipurpose wharf and boarded the suction dredger Utrecht, which is 159 meters long and has a capacity to store up to 18,292 cubic meters of sediment in its tank.

The dredging is considered a critical step to ensure that the port of Rio Grande continues to operate with an adequate draft, allowing the reception of large vessels. This is a decisive factor for the export of agricultural, industrial, and mineral products from southern Brazil.

According to the state’s Secretary of Logistics and Transport, Juvir Costella, the dredging will be very important for improving the state’s economic development. “The works represent a significant qualification for the waterway mode, fundamental for attracting investments and new opportunities in the sector,” he emphasized.

Meanwhile, the president of Portos RS, Cristiano Klinger, considered that the maintenance of the access channels and berths is fundamental to guaranteeing continuous and safe navigability. This investment allows the port to operate fully, maintaining its competitiveness and expanding its logistical capacity.
