Bureau Veritas has granted approval in principle for the basic design of a 14,000-TEU LNG-powered containership developed jointly by Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering, CMA CGM and Bureau Veritas, reports New York’s Marine Link.
The vessel is the first fully approved ultra-large mainline containership designed to run on LNG, with the option to operate on heavy fuel oil (HFO) for added flexibility. Bureau Veritas said its HAZID analysis confirmed no technical or safety barriers to LNG adoption.
The ship will be powered by a MAN ME-GI dual fuel engine, capable of burning LNG and HFO simultaneously. In maximum gas mode, oil accounts for about 10 per cent of fuel, enabling CO2 emissions reductions of 23 per cent and SOX reductions of 92 per cent.
The design features a 365.5 metre overall length, 14 metre draft and 24 knot speed. It includes a 22,490 cu m LNG tank under the forward accommodation and a 4,430 cu m HFO bunker tank aft. The LNG tank is a Daewoo ACT-IB aluminium IMO type B unit with PUF insulation.
The main engine is rated at MCR 72,285 kW, giving the vessel a range of 25,000 miles when fully bunkered. The design sacrifices 438 TEU of cargo space to accommodate LNG systems.
“This is a real milestone,” said Jean-Francois Segretain, deputy technical director at Bureau Veritas. “The extra capital cost and reduced cargo capacity are offset by fuel savings and lower emissions.”
