Kilometer-long queues and hours of waiting: trade associations demand traceability, digitalization, and a new logistics model

Livorno – The issue of trucks entering and exiting the port of Livorno continues, with long waits for container loading and unloading operations. The main trade associations—Assotir, Cna Fita Livorno, Confartigianato Livorno, and Trasportounito—argue that these queues represent only part of the daily challenges plaguing the road haulage sector.

Association representatives stated that port inefficiencies always fall on hauliers, causing significant economic damage. They also explained that waiting times are not adequately tracked by official systems and that data provided by gates and terminals is incomplete. For this reason, they have requested the Port System Authority to integrate the Port Control System with tracking devices installed on vehicles, as already implemented in La Spezia.

According to the associations, the port of Livorno must modernize and digitalize to remain competitive and avoid burdening the weakest link in the logistics chain—hauliers—with inefficiencies and delays. They also emphasized that freight transporters must rely on guaranteed and properly compensated time, even in cases of unforeseen events beyond their control.

Finally, while acknowledging that the introduction of the Port Fee has partially rebalanced the situation, the associations hope that the new Adsp Observatory can effectively address the many critical issues of the port system—from lost trips to inefficient container management—by proposing a more functional logistics model for all stakeholders involved.
