Collision in Mediterranea near Sicily

General cargo ship Hayriye Ana (IMO 9557953) was in collision with container ship EF Olivia (IMO 9252735) during the morning of April 22nd when about 14nm from Capo Passero on the southeastern tip of Sicily, south of the ports of Syracuse and Catania.

Both vessels were reported to have suffered minor damage. The hull of the container ship was holed midships at the waterline. Both ships diverted to Sicily, while reporting restricted manoeuvrability on AIS.

The EF Olivia reached Augusta Anchorage at 21:50 local time.

The Italian Coastguard despatched to the scene an AW139 helicopter and an Atr42 aircraft, plus a patrol vessel.

The video from the Guardia Costiera did not appear to show harsh weather conditions or heavy seas.

Details of the full extent of the collision have not been released.

So far, no pollution has been reported.

The Hayriye Ana was en route from Istanbul, Turkiye, to A Coruna, Spain.

The EF Olivia was en route from Hamburg, Germany to Augusta, Sicily.

2006-built, Portugal-flagged, 3,100 teu, 35,881 gt EF Olivia is owned by EF Olivia GmbH & Co KG care of Peter Doehle Schiffahrts KG of Hamburg, Germany. It is entered with Steamship Mutual (European syndicate) on behalf of EF Olivia GmbH & Co KG.

2009-built, Liberia-flagged, 6,550 gt Hayriye Anna is owned by Aloni Shipping SA care of manager Konan Denizcilik ve Ticaret of Istanbul, Turkiye. It is entered with NorthStandard on behalf of Aloni Shipping SA.
