A crew member of the Dutch cargo ship that was attacked by the Houthis in the Gulf of Aden died from his injuries, according to Spliethoff, the company operating the vessel.
The company did not provide further details about the deceased sailor, but a spokesperson told a Dutch broadcaster that he was of Filipino nationality.
The Minerva Gracht was in international waters when it was hit by an explosive device that caused considerable damage and started a fire on board.
A helicopter was used to rescue 19 members of its crew, who are of Russian, Ukrainian, Filipino, and Sri Lankan nationality.
The Yemeni Houthis claimed responsibility for the attack. This group, aligned with Iran, has launched numerous attacks against vessels in the Red Sea since 2023, targeting ships they consider linked to Israel, in what they claim is a gesture of solidarity with the Palestinians regarding Israel’s war in Gaza.
Spliethoff added that another crew member remains under medical care in Djibouti. “His condition is stable and we hope he can return home by the end of this week,” the company stated.
