DeepOcean has completed its first subsea intervention project with offshore operational leadership run from shore, executing a 12-hour ROV operation for Aker BP at the Idun Nord field in the Norwegian Sea, according to DeepOcean.
The job used a work-class remotely operated vehicle controlled from DeepOcean’s onshore remote operating centre in Haugesund, Norway, while a second ROV was operated from a project vessel at the field.
The scope included subsea crane operations and close-proximity vessel positioning — work that would normally require a shift supervisor and an engineer offshore, potentially for a full 14-day trip.
DeepOcean said the shore-managed setup allowed key personnel to complete the work during one 12-hour shift and return home, reducing the need for offshore deployment without removing operational control from the job.
Olaf A. Hansen, executive vice president for DeepOcean’s Northern Europe region, called the project “an important step forward” in how the company delivers subsea operations.
The operation builds on DeepOcean’s remote subsea work since its first remote campaign in 2018. The company reached another milestone in 2025 by carrying out subsea dredging operations remotely.
Digital and communications systems from Remota supported real-time offshore execution from the Haugesund centre.
Aker BP’s Jarle Marius Solland, operations manager for subsea execution and survey, said the project supported the operator’s goal of improving vessel and personnel utilisation while maintaining safety and operational control.
DeepOcean and Aker BP have a long-term strategic partnership under which DeepOcean is Aker BP’s preferred supplier for subsea inspection, intervention, repair, survey and emergent operations, together with related onshore engineering and project management services.
