CMA CGM and Maersk report continued delays and bottlenecks in the world’s biggest container port in Shanghai following the weeks-long lockdown of the city due to Covid-19 outbreaks.

The weeks-long lockdown in Shanghai continues to be a source of delays and bottlenecks in the world’s biggest container port, write Maersk and CMA CGM in updates.

”The pandemic control measures that have been implemented few weeks ago have dramatically impacted the velocity of the supply chain at all levels in Shanghai and its surroundings,” reads a CMA CGM Friday update.

As a consequence of the strict Covid-19 restrictions in Shanghai, where authorities have ordered millions to stay at home since the end of March, production and logistics have been under heavy pressure.

”We always strive to improve cargo delivery for our customers in challenging circumstances, but even a minor disruption can cause a ripple effect and lead to substantial setbacks,” states Maersk.

Although the container port in Shanghai hasn’t been shut down, crew shortages and demands for testing drivers have limited efficiency and transport in and out of the terminal.

Previously, the situation has also prompted container carriers to redirect their ships to other ports than Shanghai. Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd were among the carriers.
