The Indian Cochin Shipyard is currently building four tugs for Svitzer. Kongsberg Maritime has been commissioned to supply the propulsion systems.

The newbuildings are all-electric TRAnsverse tugs. The order comprises four vessels with options for four additional units. Kongsberg Maritime’s scope of supply includes the complete electrical and automation architecture, including DC and AC switchgear, PM propulsion motors and the necessary onshore charging infrastructure. Each tug is mainly powered by a 4.8 MWh battery pack. Centralized automation and control will be provided by the K-Chief system and K-Chief PMS, which will enable seamless integration from propeller to battery and simple “one-touch” mode changes.

The tugs will each be equipped with two US L-Drive azimuth thrusters from Kongsberg Maritime with 2.8 m nozzles. Propulsion will be provided by 2,000 kW permanent magnet motors controlled by the AquaPilot thruster control system. The drives are designed to offer high efficiency and precise maneuverability for complex port and terminal operations.

To support demanding escort operations, Kongsberg Maritime also supplies one hydraulic escort winch, two capstan heads and two chain stoppers per vessel. These systems are designed to enable fast haul-out and haul-in speeds for modern escort profiles.
