Yonhap News reports, according to the Donghae Regional Maritime Police Station of South Korea, at 9:56 a.m. on the 21st, a Panama-flagged 20,000-ton cargo ship issued an emergency rescue request in waters approximately 346 kilometers northeast of Goseong County’s Geojin Port in Gangwon Province, South Korea.
The cargo ship was en route from Vladivostok, Russia to China. During the voyage, two Chinese crew members suddenly encountered an accident while performing boiler operations, suffering extensive severe burns on their limbs and requiring urgent professional medical assistance.
After receiving the distress call, the Donghae Maritime Police immediately activated the emergency response mechanism. However, due to wind and wave warnings, the incident area experienced strong winds and high waves, which imposed certain restrictions on helicopter rescue operations, causing the rescue efforts to be temporarily hindered.
At approximately 6:46 p.m. that day, after maritime weather conditions met rescue standards, the maritime police dispatched a helicopter from the Yangyang Aviation Unit to carry out the rescue. At around 7:16 p.m., the maritime police helicopter successfully picked up the two injured individuals in waters about 17 kilometers northeast of Sokcho, providing emergency medical care during the flight. They were subsequently transferred via the 119 emergency system to a hospital in Sokcho for treatment.
Kim In-chang, Commissioner of the Donghae Regional Maritime Police Station, stated that at the time of the incident, wind and wave warnings were issued for all waters in the central East Sea. Strong winds and high waves posed certain difficulties for the rescue operation, but the maritime police strictly adhered to safety procedures and ultimately succeeded in rescuing and transferring the two injured individuals.
