European shipping stands strong

The European-controlled fleet now comprises over 570 million GT, distributed across more than 22,000 vessels – equivalent to one-fifth of the total global tonnage. This is shown by a new report from the European shipping organisation ECSA.

European shipping companies control approximately 45 percent of global container capacity, 34 percent of the tanker market, 32 percent of the LNG fleet, and close to 30 percent of bulk and car transport.

It is precisely these segments that carry global trade, energy supply, and the transport of the raw materials on which the green transition depends.

However, competition in the shipping market is fierce. Right now, the Asian fleet in particular is growing faster than the European one.
