A major fire that broke out aboard the cargo ship Altay docked at Hull’s Albert Dock on 27 June has been extinguished, according to Humberside Fire and Rescue.
The blaze, which began around 10:20 BST on 27 June in a cargo hold containing 3,500 tonnes of scrap metal, sent thick smoke across Hull city centre. Fire crews brought the fire under control by about 05:00 BST on 28 June and remained on site to monitor for any reignition risk. All individuals on board the vessel were safely accounted for.
According to BBC, at its peak, the firefighting effort involved five engines, an aerial platform, and marine-trained crews. While the fire has been suppressed, residents may continue to see steam and smell smoke due to ongoing cooling operations.
CONTROL – We have five appliances and one Aerial Ladder Platform in attendance dealing with a building fire within the Sutton Fields area of Hull. We are advising residents to keep windows and doors closed and to avoid the area where possible.

Stuart Rivers, CEO of the MNWB commented on the occasion saying thatwhile it’s a sobering reminder that seafarers face serious risks, even when moored in port, MNWB commends Humberside Fire and Rescue, the port’s Control Room team and the crew of the Altay.
While It’s believed all seafarers on board have been accounted for, we will be in talks with our members, and those on the frontline, to see if any support can be offered in the wake of this fire
