Pakistan has taken a step forward on the global ship recycling scene. Prime Green Recyclers in Gadani has become the country’s first yard to officially meet the requirements of the Hong Kong Convention (HKC) for safe and environmentally sound ship recycling.
The company, established in 2000 under the name Prime Ship Breakers and later renamed Prime Green Recyclers, has received a formal Statement of Compliance from Bureau Veritas, writes Splash.
The certification could mark a breakthrough for Pakistan, which has historically lagged behind India, Bangladesh, and Turkey in terms of internationally recognized yard certification – despite the country’s position as one of the world’s most important destinations for ship recycling.
According to industry sources, this approval could be the first of several yards in the country to achieve HKC status. Two additional Pakistani yards are expected to receive similar certifications in the coming weeks, writes the media outlet.
