GIOIA TAURO – Achieving the objectives of the PNRR and completing the electrification works of the quays at the port of Gioia Tauro are the key elements at the foundation of the “Memorandum of Understanding” that the Deputy Minister of Infrastructure and Transport, Edoardo Rixi, signed together with the extraordinary commissioner of the Port System Authority of the Southern Tyrrhenian and Ionian Seas, lawyer Paolo Piacenza, on the premises of the Port Authority of Gioia Tauro.
Following the provision of the 2025 Budget Law, which resulted in the defunding of a portion of the resources for projects linked to the PNRR, including part of the cold ironing works for the port of Gioia Tauro, the newly appointed extraordinary commissioner Paolo Piacenza, together with the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport, took action to ensure the overall financial coverage for the electrification works of the Levante Quay of the Port and the Ro-Ro Quays. Without this coverage, the funding for the entire project would have been lost, leading to today’s signing of the Memorandum of Understanding.
Piacenza highlighted the importance of the “Memorandum of Understanding” which establishes – he said – «a certain basis for the completion of the port quay electrification works, in order to ensure future management with an increasingly sustainable vision aligned with European standards. We will transform this port – Piacenza continued – into a modern, sustainable port infrastructure, an innovative model of a green port, capable of meeting the eco-sustainability challenges imposed by the European Union on the logistics and transport sector».
While Rixi underlined the continuous growth in volumes at the port of Gioia Tauro, which will close the year with a handling of 4.3 million teu, commissioner Piacenza focused on the port’s strategic position in the Mediterranean circuit, which must be further developed to ensure greater international leadership in the context of global maritime transport.
At the same time, Piacenza emphasized the relationship and economic benefits that the port must offer to its reference territory: -«Among my main objectives – he stated – besides wanting to further strengthen the role and international activity of the Gioia Tauro hub, I maintain the firm belief that the hub can also offer added value to the territory that hosts it, so that a nationally recognized logistics hub can be created».

The Deputy Minister of Infrastructure and Transport, Rixi, stated: -«The signing of the memorandum for the electrification of the quays at the port of Gioia Tauro represents a decisive step in achieving the objectives of the PNRR. An investment of almost 70 million euros, the most significant at a national level for this type of intervention, to turn the main transshipment hub of the Mediterranean into a modern, sustainable infrastructure compliant with European standards. It is a result that strengthens the competitiveness of the Italian port system and confirms the commitment of the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport for an increasingly innovative and environmentally respectful logistics».
