Appeal also from Hanwha Ocean: “They need clarity on the evolution of fuels”

Hamburg – “We currently use conventional fuels and biofuels, LNG and biomethane; starting next year we will begin retrofitting for methanol and we are also cautiously evaluating the first ammonia-based units.” This was stated by Silke Lehmköster, fleet managing director of Hapag-Lloyd on the occasion of the presentation of DNV’s Maritime Forecast 2050 report. An opportunity to delve into new strategies for maritime decarbonization which could expand as highlighted by the manager of the German giant, who is also calling for more certainty regarding IMO decisions: “The company is studying CO₂ capture and storage, as well as the potential of auxiliary sails to improve container ship efficiency,” Lehmköster continues. For Hanwha Ocean, present at the discussion, the challenge is different, but equally complex. “We hope that the adoption of the IMO’s net zero framework will bring us greater certainty on the timing and evolution of fuels, so that we can focus our engineering resources on developing the technologies that our customers require,” stated Claire Wright, managing director for Europe of Hanwha Ocean.
