Finnlines is using a graphene-based hard foul release hull coating across its RoRo and RoPax fleets to help further its decarbonisation efforts.
Beginning in 2022, the shipping firm has applied the innovative coating to four vessels as part of a deal with GIT Coatings, reducing fuel consumption and emissions by a reported 7%.

Finnlines has adopted a graphene-based hard foul release hull coating
“Our commitment to sustainability is at the forefront of every decision we make,” said Thomas Doepel, vice president and deputy chief executive at Finnlines.
“By integrating XGIT-FUEL into our fleet, we are not only reducing costs and advancing our environmental goals but also setting a new standard in the industry for environmental responsibility.”
XGIT-FUEL is a biocide-free, hard foul release coating that offers an environmentally friendly alternative to conventional toxic anti-fouling and soft-foul release hull coatings.
As well as reducing vessel drag, it uses graphene to enhance resistance to mechanical damage, making it more suitable for vessels sailing in icy conditions.
Requiring only one layer, it can be applied in temperatures ranging from -5 to 40°C, allowing it to be used during winter drydocking.
