Severnaya Verf Shipyard (part of United Shipbuilding Corporation) has held an official keel-laying ceremony for the Project 22350 frigate Admiral Gromov (Admiral Gorshkov class). This is the ninth ship being built to a design developed at St. Petersburg based USC’ Severnoye Design Bureau, a PortNews correspondent reports.
The Gorshkov class frigate Admiral Gromov is a multipurpose surface warship carrying long-range precision-guided missiles, including the Zircon hypersonic missile. Severnaya Verf will be building the frigate using only Russian technologies and domestically produced materials.
During the ceremony a commemorative plaque was placed under the keel block with the date and location of construction.
The new frigate is namesake of the distinguished Soviet and Russian naval commander Felix Gromov (1937-2021), the first Commander-in-Chief of the Russian Navy and the first in the Russian Federation to be awarded the highest naval rank of the highest officer in the Russian Navy – Admiral of the Fleet (1996). Felix Gromov served as Commander-in-Chief of the Navy from 1992 to 1997. He managed to preserve the Navy’s combat capabilities and to begin construction of new warships.
The Russian Navy currently operates three Project 22350 warships: the Admiral of the Fleet of the Soviet Union Gorshkov, the lead ship of the series, and the Admiral Kasatonov and Admiral Golovko.
The Project 22350 frigates are designed to engage surface ships, convoys, and landing detachments; search for and destroy submarines and land targets; provide air, anti-submarine, and anti-missile defense for ships and vessels; operate jointly with amphibious assault forces; perform patrol duties; protect state borders; and ensure the protection of civilian vessels and maritime economic facilities of the Russian Federation.
The frigates are armed with a 130mm A-192 artillery mount, the Redut VLS, Zircon hypersonic missiles, Kalibr cruise missiles, and torpedo tubes for Paket-NK anti-submarine systems. The frigate has a helipad for Ka-27 helicopters of various configurations.
The Project 22350 general characteristics:
Displacement: 4,500 tonnes; Length: 135 meters; Beam: 16 meters; Draft: 4.5 meters; Speed: up to 30 knots; Cruising range: 4,500 miles; Endurance: 30 days; Complement: 180–210.
