IACS’ meeting discussed its progress producing technical guidance for new fuels and technologies, and its role in digitalisation, cyber systems and marine autonomous surface ships

International Association of Classification Societies (IACS) is developing technical guidance across a range of key technologies to reduce emissions and the risk ofcyber attacks.

IACS Council met in Beijing, China, in early July to advance these initiatives and to integrateenvironmental, social and governance (ESG) principles intoitsgovernance.

The council’s safe decarbonisation panel welcomed the rapid progress made in developing technical guidance for new fuels and technologies to reduce emissions on vessels.

IACS’ instruments now cover ammonia, methanol, hydrogen, batteries and carbon capture and it is working with flag states to develop gas dispersion analysis and risk assessments for alternative fuels, as required by IMO’s IGF Code. IACS is also assessing its potential role in introducing nuclear technologies in the maritime industry.
