The final vote on the adoption of the new Net-Zero Framework will be postponed by one year.

The International Maritime Organization has in fact announced that it has decided to postpone the extraordinary meeting of the Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC), which was tasked with adopting the new regulatory framework that introduces a global carbon pricing system.

The decision, made on Friday by the International Maritime Organization with 57 votes in favor, 49 against, and 21 abstentions, effectively certifies the stalemate that has been created within the IMO.

EU countries voted against the postponement, while Russia, China, and major oil-exporting countries voted in favor.

According to several analysts, the postponement will only prolong the current situation of uncertainty, with devastating effects on the maneuvers to approach NET-ZERO.

The IMO, however, has announced that in the meantime it will continue to work on the NZF implementation guidelines. The next meeting on the topic is already scheduled for the coming days.
