The only LNG terminal in Greece on the island of Revithoussa, near Athens, is to be upgraded in the coming months. The development is to hedge against the worst case of complete cessation of natural gas from Russia.
The LNG terminal is managed by Hellenic Gas Transmission System Operator (DESFA). This is the only terminal in Greece capable of receiving, storing, and supplying LNG to the country after regasification. It provides the country’s Natural Gas Transmission System. According to the data released by the DESFA, the terminal’s storage capacity is 225,000 cubic meters, and it can regasify 1,250 cubic meters per hour. The upgrade involves the addition of a floating storage unit to the existing complex, which will add a storage capacity of 380,000 cubic meters and increase the regasification rate by 12%.
In 2021, 31.8% of the country’s natural gas imports entered this facility alone. For years approximately 40% of the country’s natural gas needs have been met by Russia. Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis stated that Liquified Natural Gas was extremely critical in diversifying gas supply sources. Revithoussa has a key role to play in this plan, now and after the upgrade.
