According to a report from Reuters, the port of Ravenna in Italy has taken a stand against military shipments by halting two trucks believed to be transporting arms intended for Israel. This decision comes as dockworkers and labor organizations ramp up their protests regarding the ongoing military actions in Gaza.
The local authorities, including Ravenna’s mayor Alessandro Barattoni and regional officials, intervened to prevent the trucks from entering the port. While it is known that Italy prohibits arms sales to Israel, Barattoni pointed out that existing loopholes allow weapons from other nations to transit through Italian ports. However, he did not disclose the origin of these containers or confirm their contents.
This incident is part of a broader trend across Europe where various ports—such as those in France, Sweden, and Greece—have also taken measures against weapon deliveries bound for Israel. This reflects an increasing sentiment within Italy opposing Israeli military operations while advocating for humanitarian assistance for Palestinians.
The Israeli embassy in Rome has refrained from commenting due to insufficient information on this specific case but has previously accused European countries of being swayed by Hamas narratives.
In response to these developments, CGIL—the largest trade union in Italy—has announced plans for a national half-day strike along with demonstrations scheduled across major cities like Rome on Friday. Additionally, two other unions are set to disrupt activities at Genoa and Livorno ports on September 22nd. Riccardo Rudino from Genoa’s Calp dockers’ union emphasized their commitment by stating they would not permit any shipments through their facilities.
Health officials in Gaza report that over 65,000 individuals have lost their lives due to Israel’s military campaign since its initiation following an attack by Hamas militants on October 7th that resulted in more than 1,200 deaths and numerous hostages taken.
CGIL aims for these protests to influence Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s administration towards severing commercial ties with Israel while advocating for lifting humanitarian restrictions and recognizing Palestine as an independent state.
Meanwhile, Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani indicated that Italy supports EU sanctions targeting violent Israeli settlers and officials who have made inflammatory statements regarding Gaza and the West Bank. He also mentioned that further trade sanctions could be considered moving forward.
