The Italian Ministry of Environment and Energy Security (MASE) confirmed, through the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) Decree, the environmental, landscape, and cultural compatibility of the new Fiumicino Tourist and Cruise Port project.

Fiumicino Waterfront, the company holding the state concession in the Isola Sacra area of the Municipality of Fiumicino, Italy, celebrated the decision, as the new site in Isola Sacra is expected to be a fundamental pillar of Fiumicino’s sustainable development, a social and economic catalyst that will become an attractive destination for both boaters and tourists and residents.

Furthermore, the responsible use of resources and adherence to the principles of the circular economy will generate useful and necessary elements to counteract coastal erosion on the Lazio coast, especially in Fregene and Macchiagrande.

This will not only boost tourism in the surrounding areas but will also actively protect the nearby nature reserves by reconstructing the original dune habitats, which constitute biodiversity hotspots of recognized importance for European conservation.

“The EIA represents a decisive step for the transformation of the Fiumicino-Isola Sacra area into an engine of sustainable economic growth, tourism, and community development, as requested by the Fiumicino City Council,” stated Galliano Di Marco, chief executive officer of Fiumicino Waterfront.

“With a total investment of approximately USD 650 million, the project will become one of the most innovative and sustainable tourist infrastructures in the Mediterranean, and tangible proof that infrastructure development and urban regeneration can go hand in hand, boosting the economic and social growth of the community,” added Di Marco.

The new tourist and cruise port will also host giga and mega yachts, complementing its main function with a cruise berth that will be available for use by all lines and that will enhance a state-of-the-art marina both from a technological and landscape perspective.

A large public park and a high-quality international hotel, along with areas dedicated to services for visitors and users, complete the profile of a project focused on urban regeneration and regional enhancement, with a significant economic impact.

According to a study commissioned by Fiumicino Waterfront from an international consultancy, the Project’s contribution to GDP is estimated at over USD 550 million during the construction phase and approximately USD 450 million annually during operation.

Furthermore, the project is expected to generate around 2 thousand jobs per year during the four years of construction and over 5,000 permanent jobs during operation.

The strategic location of Fiumicino, a few kilometers from Rome and near the international airport, will allow the plan to meet the growing demand for innovative and reliable infrastructure for nautical and cruise tourism in the Mediterranean, boosting the regional economy and fostering potential synergies with the Port of Civitavecchia.

Special attention has been paid to the road infrastructure in the Isola Sacra area.

Fiumicino Waterfront is committed to actively contributing to the improvement of local mobility by implementing, in collaboration with public and private actors, the compensatory works that the Implementing Body, the Municipality of Fiumicino, deems necessary.

These compensatory works will be discussed and planned by the working group Mobility Committee, coordinated by the mayor of Fiumicino and bringing together all relevant entities (Lazio region, ANAS, Italian Railways, Metropolitan City of Rome, Aeroporti di Roma, Fiumicino Pier).

The Committee, established by the mayor in March 2025, will guarantee the coordination of the authorization process and the harmonious development of infrastructure projects in the municipality, including the new Scafa Bridge, the roundabout and bridge of Via Trincea delle Frasche, and the viaduct connecting to the airport.
