Jan De Nul has signed a contract with Synera Renewable Energy (SRE) for the installation of export cables at the Taiwanese offshore wind farm Formosa 4, the company said in a statement.

Under the agreement, Jan De Nul will transport, install, and protect 60 kilometres of subsea cables to deliver electricity from the site to shore. Located 20 kilometres off Miaoli County, Formosa 4 consists of 35 turbines with a total capacity of 495 megawatts, providing green energy to about half a million households.

Work is scheduled to begin in 2026 and continue through 2027, using the cable-laying vessel Willem de Vlamingh.

The company was also selected as the preferred contractor for export cables at SRE’s Formosa 6 project, located 55 kilometres southwest of Formosa 4. Jan De Nul has been active in Taiwan since 1990 and has supported offshore wind projects since 2017.

Wouter Vermeersch, Director Subsea Cables Offshore Energy at Jan De Nul, said that with the new contract and other ongoing works — including Greater Changhua 2b & 4 and Fengmiao 1 — Jan De Nul has a project portfolio in Taiwan extending through 2028.

Taiwan’s offshore wind capacity has reached more than three gigawatts, generated by 374 turbines, placing it seventh worldwide. With projects under construction, Taiwan is expected to surpass Belgium and move to sixth place this year. The country aims to exceed 13 gigawatts by 2030.

The announcement follows Jan De Nul’s recent recognition from the Belgian Embassy in Taiwan for its contribution to offshore wind development. According to the Embassy, trade between Belgium and Taiwan more than doubled between 2020 and 2025.
