Recently, Kongsberg Maritime of Norway has signed a contract with Canada’s Irving Shipbuilding Inc. to supply fixed propellers for the Royal Canadian Navy’s (RCN) River-class Destroyer (RCD) project.
This contract is part of Canada’s National Shipbuilding Strategy, aimed at replacing the existing Halifax-class vessels. Kongsberg Maritime will provide a pair of fixed propellers for each of the first three ships in this project.
Björn ten Eicken, Vice President of Naval Business at Kongsberg Maritime, stated: “We are proud to provide mission-critical technology for some of the world’s most important naval projects and are very pleased to be selected by Irving Shipbuilding to apply our mature and reliable technology to the River-class Destroyer project. The River-class Destroyer platform is a highly advanced and versatile warship, and we look forward to working closely with Irving Shipbuilding and the Royal Canadian Navy during the installation of the propellers and other equipment.”
This contract covers the supply of propellers for the first three ships, with deliveries scheduled to begin in 2028. The entire project plans to build 15 vessels, with the delivery period extending into the 2040s.
Last year, Kongsberg Maritime also signed another series of technology supply contracts with Irving Shipbuilding, including non-retractable stabilizer fins, steering gears and rudders, Replenishment At Sea (RAS) movable high points, and technical documentation packages as required by Irving Shipbuilding and the Royal Canadian Navy.
