A joint operation by the Provincial Command of the Guardia di Finanza of Reggio Calabria and the Office of the Agenzia delle Dogane e dei Monopoli of Gioia Tauro culminated in the seizure of a shipment of very pure cocaine weighing over 175 kilograms inside the port area.

The intervention, informs the Agenzia delle Dogane e Monopoli, is an integral part of a complex plan to strengthen controls and inspections concerning the entire Gioia area, with the specific objective of identifying, among the thousands of containers handled daily, those used by criminal associations to hide the narcotic.

The ADM personnel and the soldiers of the Gioia Tauro Group, as part of the controls of the areas of the local port terminal, aimed at intercepting any loads of narcotic substances imported by organized crime, selected and subjected three containers to accurate inspections, two of which came from Latin America and were destined for Italy and Eastern European countries, transporting frozen octopus and shrimp respectively.

The checks were carried out in two distinct phases: initially, the blocked containers were subjected to an in-depth radiographic scan using the sophisticated scanner equipment available to the Customs Agency. Subsequently, a physical inspection was carried out with the fundamental support of the canine units of the Guardia di Finanza of Gioia Tauro.

The final result of the checks led to the discovery and seizure of 154 bricks of cocaine that had been skillfully concealed inside the containers.

This is yet another success achieved at the Gioia port in the fight against international drug trafficking, which highlights the effectiveness of the joint operational action of the Guardia di Finanza and the Customs Agency, explains the note, adding that the operation prevented the release onto the market of a shipment that, according to estimates, would have earned the criminal organizations a substantial revenue, quantified at approximately 30 million euros.

The documents compiled during the operation were promptly transmitted to the Procura della Repubblica of Palmi, for the attention of prosecutor Emanuele Crescenti and the on-duty magistrate, for the validation of the seizure and the continuation of the investigations.
