The president of the Maritime League of Chile (Ligamar), Admiral (R) Edmundo González Robles, will propose that Chile host the General Assembly of the International Federation of Maritime and Naval Leagues and Associations (Fidalmar) in 2029. This is within the framework of the 150th anniversary of the Naval Combat of Iquique and Punta Gruesa.
“Chile is not applying to commemorate its own anniversary, such as the heroic deeds of the Naval Combat of Iquique and Punta Gruesa, but to call the maritime world to reflect together on the future of the sea. We want 2029 to be an international meeting point, not just a historical commemoration,” said Edmundo González.
It is worth mentioning that the head of Ligamar, together with the executive director, Renato Casas-Cordero, are representing Chile at the XXXV General Assembly of Fidelmar 2025 in Lisbon, Portugal, organized this year by the Maritime Brotherhood of Portugal.
At the meeting, Ligamar will also present a proposal to modernize Fidelmar’s communications ecosystem, particularly its official website and social media, making available the digital development and positioning expertise achieved by the Chilean entity.
Chile has also been responsible for organizing instances such as the XX General Assembly of Fidelmar in Valparaíso (2004) and again in 2014, on the occasion of Ligamar’s centenary.
“In a global scenario marked by climate change, maritime security, and ocean governance, this space now acquires a strategic value greater than at its origins,” concluded González.
