Lloyd’s List Intelligence is opening a major Centre of Excellence for Data and Technology in Chennai as demand for trusted maritime intelligence grows. The move strengthens its presence in Asia at a time when global trade faces rising uncertainty. The new hub will become central to the company’s daily data operations.
Lloyd’s List Intelligence will open its new Centre of Excellence for Data and Technology in Chennai on 21 November, marking one of the company’s most significant global expansions in recent years. The move reflects the growing importance of Asia in world trade and the rising need for dependable data as maritime risk becomes harder to navigate.
Chennai has long been known for its maritime heritage and is home to the Indian Maritime University. It has also developed into one of the fastest growing centres for engineering and technology. This combination of expertise and talent has drawn interest from global companies and helped secure government backing. The Government of Tamil Nadu pledged its support earlier this year and signed a memorandum of understanding with the company in September.
The new centre will add more than 200 roles across data analysis, software development and quality assurance. Staff in Chennai will be directly involved in the cleaning and delivery of more than one billion maritime data points every day. Their work will support customers in shipping, insurance, finance and government who rely on timely and accurate information to manage regulatory demands and geopolitical pressures.
Waqas Samad, CEO of Lloyd’s List Intelligence, said, “Our mission is to help customers understand and manage risk across every maritime interaction. That means not only providing the most reliable data, but also ensuring it is delivered in ways that are faster, smarter, and easier to use. Our new Chennai Centre of Excellence sits at the heart of this ambition, bringing together world-class talent to enhance our products and services, strengthen data security, and accelerate innovation so our customers can act with confidence in an increasingly complex trading environment.”
Arpan Chatterjee, Vice President Operations, added, “Our new hub reflects our commitment to delivering greater value for our customers while investing in world-class talent. Chennai is a dynamic city with remarkable energy and resources, and we are excited to build our presence here as an active and valued member of the local business community.”
Lloyd’s List Intelligence traces its roots to a London coffee house where sailors, merchants and shipowners once exchanged information. Today it maintains offices across four continents and has become one of the most trusted sources of maritime risk and trade intelligence. The Chennai expansion confirms its intention to stay at the centre of a sector that is being reshaped by digitalisation, regulation and geopolitical change.
