Korean submarine cable manufacturer LS Marine Solution has agreed a contract with Tersan Shipyard in Turkey to build a high-voltage direct current cable-lay vessel

The news was reported by Korea Herald, which said the newbuild will be Asia’s largest of its type, with a cable loading capacity of 13,000 tonnes. The new vessel will also be one of the most capable worldwide.

The cable-lay vessel is designed to lay HVDC submarine cables and fibre optic cables.

LS Marine Solutions earlier announced it would be investing US$252M to build the cable-lay vessel, which is due to enter into operation by 2028.

The Korean company plans to use the vessel to lay cables for the offshore wind market in Asia and elsewhere, and target domestic projects such as Korea’s West Coast HVDC Energy Highway.
