Maersk has introduced a new weekly maritime service connecting the Adriatic with key Eastern Mediterranean ports, aiming to improve transit times and strengthen supply chain reliability in an expanding corridor.
The Adriatic service connects Koper, Venice, Rijeka and Ancona with Damietta and Port Said, offering a direct link between the Adriatic region and Egypt, as well as access to a wider Mediterranean network. Developed in collaboration with ONE, the service features an optimised port rotation, designed to reduce transit times and improve punctuality.
The launch of the Adriatic Service reflects a broader market evolution across the Mediterranean. Trade between the European Union and Egypt reached approximately 32.3 billion euros in 2025 (Europe), highlighting the scale and importance of this corridor and the ongoing demand for efficient transport links between the regions.
Furthermore, Egypt’s role as a regional gateway further reinforces the relevance of direct Adriatic connections. With total exports exceeding 53 billion dollars in 2024, the country remains a nerve centre connecting Europe with Middle Eastern markets and neighbouring regions. This strategic position allows cargo transiting through Port Said or Damietta to reach a wider market without increasing supply chain complexity.
Meanwhile, demand for refrigerated transport continues to rise on Mediterranean trade routes, driven by food supply chains and perishable goods. Shorter transit times and direct, reliable routes can help maintain product quality and reduce the risk of disruptions, making the service more suitable for sensitive cargo flows.
Increasing trade volumes, growing reliance on regional ports and higher expectations regarding speed and reliability are transforming the configuration of supply chains.
