Maersk Tankers has named the Jane Maersk in Mokpo, South Korea, the first in a new series of ten high-capacity /VLGC vessels. Designed for flexible LPG and ammonia transport, the vessel honors the company’s gas shipping heritage while significantly boosting its capacity to support the evolving global energy transition.

Mokpo, South Korea | June 23, 2026 – Maersk Tankers has marked a significant milestone in its fleet expansion strategy, celebrating the naming ceremony of the Jane Maersk in Mokpo, South Korea. The vessel is the first of a new series of ten Very Large Ammonia Carriers (VLAC) and Very Large Gas Carriers (VLGC) currently under construction, reinforcing the company’s commitment to evolving energy markets.

The ceremony was attended by key partners, customers, and industry colleagues, with Mrs. Mika Takahashi presiding as the vessel’s Godmother.

The name Jane Maersk holds deep historical significance for the company. Maersk Tankers’ involvement in the gas shipping sector dates back to 1972, when the Inge Maersk, an LPG and ammonia carrier, first joined the fleet.

In 1990, the company significantly expanded its footprint in the large gas carrier market with a new generation of vessels built in Korean shipyards. The first vessel of that pivotal series was also christened Jane Maersk. By reviving the name today, Maersk Tankers honors its decades-long heritage while pivoting toward the next generation of energy transport.

Designed specifically to meet the complex requirements of modern energy shipping, the new Jane Maersk is built to transport both LPG and ammonia. This dual-capability is a strategic move, providing Maersk Tankers with the flexibility to adapt to shifting demand as the global energy transition accelerates.

By investing in this series of ten vessels, Maersk Tankers is positioning itself to be a primary enabler in the supply chains for cleaner fuels and industrial feedstocks, balancing traditional LPG utility with the rising demand for green ammonia transport.

Headquartered in Copenhagen, Denmark, Maersk Tankers is a global leader in the tanker and gas carrier market. Tracing its operational legacy to 1928, the company operates one of the world’s largest tanker fleets, combining direct ownership with commercial management solutions for third-party shipowners.

By the Numbers:

Maersk Tankers is part of the A.P. Moller Group, owned by A.P. Moller Holding.
