Mexico and Canada retaliate with tariffs against us

Officials in Canada and Mexico retaliated hours after President Donald Trump imposed a 25% tariff on Saturday on imports from the neighboring countries, announcing that they would retaliate by implementing their own import tariffs on U.S. goods.

Trump signed an executive order that placed 25% tariffs on imports from Canada and Mexico, while Chinese products will receive an additional 10% tariff. Canadian energy imports will only be tariffed at 10%.

The U.S. duties on the three countries will be in effect starting Tuesday.

Trudeau said Canada would put 25% tariffs on up to $155 billion in U.S. imports.

“Just like the American tariffs, our response will also be far-reaching and will include everyday items like American beer, wine and bourbon, fruits and fruit juices, including orange juice, along with vegetables, perfumes, clothing and shoes,” Trudeau said during a press conference Saturday. “It will include important consumer products, such as appliances, furniture and sports equipment, and materials like lumber and plastics.”

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said her country would respond with tariffs against the United States, but did not immediately reveal details of the plan.

“I am instructing the Secretary of Economy to implement Plan B on which we have been working, which includes tariff and non-tariff measures in defense of Mexico’s interests,” Sheinbaum wrote on the social media platform X. “It is not by imposing tariffs that problems are solved, but by speaking and dialoguing as we have done in recent weeks with [Trump’s] State Department to address the phenomenon of migration; in our case, with respect for human rights.”
