Mersin International Port (MIP) hosted the MSC IRINA, the world’s largest container ship by TEU (twenty-foot equivalent unit) capacity, at the recently completed 880-meter-long East Med Hub 2 (EMH2) Terminal on November 7, 2025.
A massive container ship by Megamax standards, the MSC IRINA, which is 400 meters long, 61.3 meters wide, and has a 24,346 TEU capacity, lends its name to a distinct sub-class of vessel known as the IRINA class.
MIP General Manager Ajay Kumar Singh said, “We are proud to have successfully berthed the MSC IRINA, one of the top 6 largest vessels operating in container shipping, at our port.”
Ajay Kumar Singh continued his words: “The completion of the first phase of the East Med Hub 2 (EMH2) Terminal has elevated Mersin’s position in maritime trade, making it a key trading point in the global supply chain. Connecting Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and Asia as a hub, Mersin Port significantly contributes to Turkey’s competitiveness in global maritime shipping. To maintain progress, we are expanding our equipment fleet with new automated rail-mounted gantry cranes and launching Turkey’s first Yard Automation System, a significant milestone that will substantially increase our operational efficiency. Looking ahead, we will increase our momentum and continue our efforts to provide our customers with the safest and most efficient service, aligned with MIP’s goal of making Mersin a vital transshipment hub in the region.”
The EMH2 Terminal is planned to be fully operational in 2026.
