To provide customers with higher quality container equipment and further simplify the repair and cleaning processes, Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) has issued an important customer advisory, announcing the official implementation of a Damage Protection Fee in Mainland China effective November 1, 2025. The specific details are as follows:
1. Fee Code and Amount
The fee code for this Damage Protection Fee is ZDP. The charging standards vary by container type:
Dry Containers: RMB 75 per dry container. This fee can be offset against repair and cleaning costs for that container, up to a maximum of RMB 675.
Reefer Containers: RMB 135 per reefer container. This fee can be offset against repair and cleaning costs for that container, up to a maximum of RMB 750.
2. Effective Date
General Rule: Effective from November 1, 2025, based on the date the cargo arrives at the mother vessel’s discharge port in Mainland China.
Special Case: For cargo imported from the United States and Puerto Rico, the effective date is based on the full container gate-in time at the port of loading, also effective from November 1, 2025.
3. Payment Method
The Damage Protection Fee will be collected on a Collect basis at the destination port.
4. Scope of Application
This Damage Protection Fee applies to all import full dry and reefer containers arriving at Mainland China ports. However, the following two categories of cargo are excluded from this fee:
Cargo covered under existing Repair and Cleaning Inclusive Agreements.
Marble cargo imported into Guangdong Province.
5. Handling of Excess Amounts
If the repair and cleaning costs for a dry container exceed RMB 675, or for a reefer container exceed RMB 750, the excess amount will be handled according to the original repair and cleaning procedures.
