Medlog acquires the Dhaka inland terminal and aims to revolutionize the country’s river and logistics connections
Dhaka – MSC strengthens its presence in the Asian subcontinent by winning the management of the Pangaon Inland Container Terminal (PICT), a strategic hub along the Buriganga River, on the outskirts of Dhaka. The agreement, signed through Medlog, represents one of the most significant investments by a global carrier in Bangladesh’s internal logistics infrastructure. The operation involves the modernization of the terminal, the introduction of advanced technological systems and the expansion of operational capacity to approximately 160,000 TEUs per year. Medlog will also use PICT’s barges to enhance river connections between the capital and internal and coastal ports, reducing pressure on the already heavily congested road infrastructure. For the CEO of MSC, Soren Toft, the initiative confirms the growing centrality of Bangladesh in regional trade routes: “We believe the country has the potential to become a key gateway for global trade in South Asia.” Salvatore Prudente, executive director of Medlog, also emphasizes the green vision behind the investment: more traffic by water means fewer emissions, less urban congestion and more resilient logistics. MSC’s entry comes at a time of strong foreign capital attraction in Bangladesh: just a few months ago APM Terminals signed a $550 million agreement for the new Laldia Container Terminal in Chattogram, which is set to change the country’s port profile by 2030.
